Starlight is Magic Dancing Across the Dark

May we have this dance?

In Brightest Day, In Darkest Night...

As we prepare to enter the new millennium, we managed to find a new twist to the Lightbringer story, one that totally delighted us as night people. From the islands near the equator, flooded in light, we found a Darkbringer.

In the Banks Islands of Melanesia, Earthmother and her children lived in constant sunlight. They had no night, no stars, no relief or rest from a sun that never dimmed. So Quat the Creator decided to travel to the edge of the sky where it was rumored the night lived.

Qong, the great darkness, is a very cool guy and he was glad to send a piece of himself home with Quat, and to teach him about sleep and how wonderful it is to be comfy in your own little bed under the cold light of the stars.

Quat rowed home in his canoe filled with darkness and the cool of night, and on the way, he was joined by the local birds. (Though we think that toucan might really be Raven in drag.)

The Birds had always known about the dark, and they also know when the sun is about to return. Every day, they would sing to greet the returning sun and tell everyone it was time to greet a new day, just like the Audubon bird clock.

On the first new day, when Quat heard the dawn chorus, he and the birds rowed out on the shimmering sea, and Quat cut the sky open with a sharp red rock. The red pigment and the golden light flooded through again.

It's much easier to go carolling now. You don't even need a canoe. So donŐt be s.a.d.d.
Let's stay up all night and sing till dawn.

The full moon of December is the closest to the Earth. Huge and close, it seems you could gather it in your arms. Dawn isn't really first light- the night is full of other suns, and they are as close to us as they will ever be. Reach for the stars! Fill your life with Light and make your own Magic.

At this holiday time, we wish you all the Joy and Light of the season, every season in turn.
Whether you are into hibernation or celebration, in your heart, as in the heart of the wheat,
enjoy the fruitfulness of the past and nurture the kernel that is the promise of the future.

May your Dreams be as Bright as the Northern Lights and your Hearts as Warm as Live Arctic Fur.

We wish you the Brightest of New Years-  Safe Haven, Snug Harbour and Always the Welcome of a Loving Heart. As winter dances over the land, remember that you always have a warm, safe nest in our hearts.
